Champion lakes – WA.

Located in the city of Armadale in WA, Champions Lake is a man made expert designed aquatic centre which opened in 2009, about 16 years ago. With a budget of approximately $ 30 million dollars invested in the construction of the top venue facility. It’s an international standard facility of an Olympic venue. In consists of Rowing, canoeing, dragon boating and triathlon events, champions lake is home to a family focused activity, also very interactive and full of different activities.
According to Gorham, on his paper of, Champion lakes master plan development, there was a need to develop a water bases recreational park which incorporated an international rowing course and other facilities, including a residential component on land that would be situated on, lake road.

Some of the considerations and summery of the EPA included:

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) reviewed a proposal by the Western Australian Planning Commission and the City of Armadale to develop a 138-hectare water-based recreation park in Armadale. The proposed park will feature an international rowing course, residential areas, urban land uses, sporting and conservation facilities, an Aboriginal interpretive centre, conference amenities, short stay accommodation, and some retail commercial outlets.
Environmental Impacts
Approximately 4.65 hectares of a rare vegetation complex (with less than 10% of its original extent remaining in the Perth Metropolitan Region) will be affected.
Roughly 3.38 hectares of Threatened Ecological Communities will be impacted.
The area contains Bush Forever Site 260, with risks of weed and disease spread.
Fauna habitat will be affected, with both positive and negative implications for wildlife.
The site is already largely cleared for agriculture, and remaining vegetation is degraded. The proponent has committed to rehabilitating retained vegetation.

THE PROJECT:

The completion of the project has turned out to be one of the most magnificent spaces that is available for family and recreation in WA, I find myself much more interaction with this space ever so often that it is changing my life. From everyday walks to family picnics, weekend runs, pack runs, (group of planned activities with families) and the list goes on. This is a one stop that one must experience to be able to tell a friend about. The amazing sceneries, and cooling summer walk experiences just makes it worth while to get out there and enjoy a walk with your dog, a family member or enjoy a quite time alone, which is one of my Favorite things as I unwind from the pressure of the day or the week.

MY EXPERIENCE:

Being at champions lake, one can’t help but thing of champions, the questions often asked is “are champions born or are champions made? “This is a question that evokes a lot of thought, but still needs to balance, the use of talent and hard work. Although one can have a talent, it is self-discipline and hard work that often shapes and makes a champion one step ahead of the rest.

KINGS PARK

A Brief Overview of One of Perth’s Most Iconic Landmarks

History of Kings Park, Western Australia

Kings Park, located in Perth, Western Australia, is one of the world’s largest inner-city parks and holds significant historical, cultural, and ecological importance. Its story traces back thousands of years, with deep connections to the Whadjuk Noongar people, the Traditional Owners of the land.

European Settlement and Early Park Formation

After the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829, European settlers recognised the area’s elevated position and panoramic views. In 1872, a section of this land was set aside for public use as Perth Park, making it one of Australia’s earliest designated public parks. In 1895, the park was officially established and later renamed Kings Park in 1901 to commemorate the accession of King Edward the 7th.

Development and Memorials

Throughout the 20th century, Kings Park evolved, with the planting of native and exotic trees, the creation of botanic gardens, and the construction of memorials. The most notable is the State War Memorial, unveiled in 1929, which honours Western Australians who served in wars. The park has also become a site for annual Anzac Day ceremonies and Remembrance Day commemorations.

Conservation and Modern Use

Today, Kings Park covers over 400 hectares, featuring protected bushland, landscaped gardens, and recreational facilities. It is renowned for its wildflower displays, particularly during spring. The Western Australian Botanic Garden, opened in 1965, showcases the state’s unique flora. Kings Park continues to be a cherished green space, celebrating both its Indigenous heritage and its role in Perth’s public life.

Personal Experience of Kings Park

The first time I set foot in Kings Park, it felt as if my heart had finally found its home.

Kings Park has become intertwined with my life and my family’s history. We gather there for birthdays, fireworks, New Year’s Eve, and countless other occasions. Whenever I need to recharge, I am drawn to its expansive spaces. As an architecture student, I discover inspiration beneath its trees and along its winding paths.

The crisp air, the lively energy of excited visitors, and the animated laughter of children make it distinct and brimming with life. As time has gone by, I have continued to understand that space was more than just a space where people came to rest, but rather many have identified with a place as home. There is no doubt that returning after a long time feels like a part of me has been restored again. The sound of birds singing, the lovely fresh grass and flowers always leave a lasting impression on my heart. This is a space that I can never get enough of, and always long to return.
